ÉTUDE BOOK REVIEWS

Charlie Porter Étude Books for Trumpet

"Wow, what delicious, fine and tasteful play in the best memories of our Star Theo Charlier."

- Reinhold Friedrich

Critically Acclaimed International Soloist

Principal Trumpet & Artistic Director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra

"Charlie Porter's artistry is simply unparalleled in the trumpet world; he is an astounding technician, and an absolutely brilliant improviser, and every note is bathed in lyricism. These books provide a window into his singular artistry, inviting students and pros alike to transcend their technical limitations and develop a singing approach to their interpretations. To be blunt, these books are simply fantastic, some of the most important additions to the repertoire in decades. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!"

- Rex Richardson

Classical and Jazz Trumpet Soloist

"These new études are innovative, imaginative, and demanding, making them a splendid and enriching addition to the repertoire!

Well done Charlie!"

- Mark J Inouye

Principal Trumpet, San Francisco Symphony

"Charlie Porter is the compleat musician: composer, teacher and performer, who happens to play trumpet. For me, his Twenty Concert Etudes and Twenty-five Lyrical Etudes- that he wrote, published and recorded, are the 21st Century equivalent of Walter Smith’s Top Tones for the Trumpeter and Theo Charlier’s Trente-six Etudes Transcendantes. The Lyrical Etudes are in every key, as are the Top Tones. But both sets are about making music and not just “Etudes”. Until now the Charlier Etudes were the best for learning to play espressivo. Charlie, as teacher and composer advises how to approach each etude to get the most benefit for making music. He also advises how to develop a daily practice routine. And his recording of all the etudes leaves no doubt as to what is possible to play and how to achieve it. I have been retired for almost 2 decades and I had as a goal to be able to play the entire Herbert Clarke Technical Studies. I didn’t achieve that, but Charlie’s Etudes have given me the incentive to start practicing what he has written."

- Charlie Schlueter

Former Principal Trumpet, Boston Symphony Orchestra

"Charlie Porter has written two superb etude books. They are both exquisitely written and edited. The music is harmonically inventive. The phrases make sense-- interesting and fun to play. Compositionally they are on a par with Charlier and Bitsch. Congrats Charlie."

- Mark Gould

Former Principal Trumpet, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra

“Charlie Porter’s lyrical and concert etudes make valuable contributions to the library of every aspiring trumpet player. Between many of the concert etudes he shares very helpful advice on important topics, and he also has recorded each etude. These great recordings give us the best instruction of all, aiding every player to hear what conscientious practicing makes possible. Bravo!”

- John Hagstrom

Trumpet, Chicago Symphony

"One month ago, I had the good fortune to receive two books: Charlie Porter’s Twenty Concert Etudes and also his Twenty-Five Lyrical Etudes. Prior to seeing the music, I listened to Charlie’s recordings of this music – his fluency and ease of execution is extraordinary - very inspirational.

I decided to start with the first of the Concert Etudes, Badinerie. This is striking music: there is definitely an influence of the distinctive French school of buoyant, nuanced virtuosity, as befits Charlie’s Paris Conservatory studies. Mr. Porter is also an American trumpeter who is well versed in our unique and classic jazz language, and one immediately picks up on a sense of that. Speaking for myself, I sense a touch of Woody Shaw’s intervallic creativity infusing Charlie’s language. We musicians are all various blends of different influences, shades of color, and narrative vocabularies - what Charlie Porter has given us here will keep me returning, with gratitude.

I began by taking Badinerie at half the indicated tempo, specifically 8 th note = 116 instead of quarter note at that pace. I recommend a similar protocol with the Marcel Bitsch 20 Etudes, first learning no. 1 at 8 th note = 132. (Keep in mind that Bitsch’s indicated tempos were supplied by Raymond Sabarich, not the composer.) As I’ve proceeded through Porter’s virtuoso Concert Etudes, I am finding that they actually sound great at slow tempos, one sure indicator of their musical quality.

His Twenty-five Lyrical Etudes are imaginative, poetic, and welcoming to any trumpeter who opens these pages. I love the compact structures, nothing too long, one experiences a feeling of getting “built up” doing these, not getting “torn down.” There is a strong vibe of generously constructive protocol – they will be a healthy addition to anyone’s practice.

Thank you, Charlie Porter, for these two significant and profound additions to our etude repertoire!"

- Chris Gekker

Former member of the American Brass Quintet

Former Principal Trumpet of The Orchestra of St. Luke's and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

"Amazing! Challenging pieces, yet very beautiful. Fun to listen to and play. The audio helps a great deal. This will keep me busy in the practice room for a while, and I look forward to that practice time! Bravo, Charlie!"

- Alexander Norris

Jazz Trumpeter and Soloist

"This new collection etudes by Charlie Porter is an absolute milestone achievement for the trumpet world. Full of rich musicality, demanding technical and stylistic challenges, these etudes are sure to become a mainstay in our pedagogical canon, and a source of inspiration for generations to come. Bravo!"

- Dan Rosenboom

Trumpeter, Composer & Producer

"Fantastic job Charlie Porter on creating these beautiful collections of etudes. While they are very advanced in content, they are visually stunning and precise. The Twenty Five Lyrical Studies are beautiful, melodic and challenging to interpret. These etudes remind me of the finest writing for trumpet by authors like Bitsch, Tomasi, and most of all Charlier. The Twenty Concert Etudes for Trumpet are not for the faint of heart either. Challenging intervals, flexibility and most notably rhythms. I found myself doing more intensive fundamental maintenance during the week I read through these two books. The etudes are separated by short articles on performance practice and approach; some very enlightened writing as well. These two books are an absolute must-have for 21st century trumpet performers."

- John MacFerran Wilds

Instructor of Trumpet, San Diego University

Former Trumpet, San Diego Symphony

"The world of the trumpet has received a new repertoire cornerstone in the form of Charlie Porter's etudes after Theo Charlier's transcendental etudes. In a brilliant solution, Mr. Porter has accommodated his own ideas and methodologies between the etudes. The musical text of the etudes reflects a wide musical scope, beautiful melodies, and technical nuances necessary for trumpet players. The etudes are perfect for both soloist competitions and orchestral auditions as mandatory solo pieces."

- Neeme Ots

Estonian Trumpet Soloist

Artistic Director of the International Trumpet Days

TWENTY-FIVE LYRICAL ETUDES Charlie Porter has composed some truly beautiful and unique etudes for trumpet. These are wonderful studies for the intermediate or advanced musician. They cover all of the major and minor keys and include some interesting shifts in key within the etudes which make them a lot more fun to play than typical etudes of this difficulty level. Range and endurance are very reasonable, and the variety of musical styles make them fun to play. Best of all, these etudes offer the student opportunities to develop musical creativity far beyond the standard study books by Voxman, Concone, Clarke, Arban, et al. Porter's brief commentaries proceeding each etude address useful strategies in approaching the musical character of each. This book should be in every trumpeter's collection.

TWENTY CONCERT ETUDES What a refreshing group of etudes for the advanced trumpeter! Porter's Twenty Concert Etudes are not for the faint of heart, but are musically and technically challenging to performers who have enjoyed the difficult etudes of Charlier, Sabarich, Bitsch, and Vizzutti. Each etude can be programmed on recitals and juries, and are as musically satisfying as they are technically fun. A Grammy Award-winning trumpeter, composer, and educator, Charlie Porter has provided new material that will inspire and advance twentieth century performers. Charlie's recordings of the etudes are extremely inspiring. Highly recommended!

- David Hickman

Soloist, Orchestral Principal Trumpeter, Clinician

Former President of The International Trumpet Guild

- Raymond Mase

Former member of the American Brass Quintet

Former Principal Trumpet, New York City Ballet Orchestra

"Charlie Porter’s Lyrical Etudes and Concert Etudes are a remarkable addition to the trumpet repertoire, offering both students and professionals an engaging and musically enriching challenge. The Lyrical Etudes focus on phrasing, breath control, and musical expressivity, making them an excellent resource for developing a warm, singing tone. These pieces are not just exercises but beautifully crafted musical works that enhance interpretation skills. The Concert Etudes present technically demanding yet musically rewarding challenges, exploring advanced articulation, range, and flexibility. Each étude feels like a miniature concert piece, blending virtuosity with expressive depth. Porter’s compositions fill a gap in the trumpet literature, providing fresh and modern études that inspire creativity while reinforcing fundamental skills. These books are essential for any trumpeter looking to refine their artistry, making them a valuable asset for conservatories, private studios, and soloists alike."

- Marc Geujon

Principal Trumpet, Opera National de Paris

"As a professional trumpet player and a professor, I highly recommend Charlie Porter’s 20 Concert Études for Trumpet and 25 Lyrical Études for Trumpet. The Concert Études are packed with technical challenges that push flexibility, precision, and endurance, while the Lyrical Études focus on phrasing, musicality, and tone. Both books are incredibly well-written and bring something fresh to the trumpet repertoire. Whether you’re a student or a professional, these études will challenge, inspire, and elevate your playing. They’re a fantastic addition to any trumpeter’s library. Congratulations, Charlie, on these exceptional works!"

- Kevin Finamore

Asst. Principal Trumpet, Dallas Symphony Orchestra

"Twenty Concert Études for Trumpet Is a wonderful collection of new études each of which provide excellent practical challenges within interesting musical frameworks. It is blessing to have a new book (with reference recordings) to supplement the standard études of Charlier and Bitsch. I will certainly be using these with my students. Twenty-Five Lyrical Études for Trumpet is an excellent collection of pieces that help to develop one’s musical voice. They are intelligently organized by key following the circle of 5ths, covering both major and minor keys. This can become a “go-to” book for intermediate players, and also serve as a great resource for seasoned players who are looking for new, high quality lyrical studies."

- David Bilger

Former Principal Trumpet, The Philadelphia Orchestra

"Mr. Porter and I have known each other for almost 30 years as a colleague and friend, and I have had the privilege of witnessing his incredible evolution as an artist over these years. The two étude books published by Mr. Porter is astonishing in many ways. The most notable is that these books show the current level of the highest technical prowess on the instrument, combined with eloquent, smooth writing reminiscent of the great standard French études. Also, these offerings remind me of the great unaccompanied répertoire for the violin or cello. Mr. Porter's rich musical vocabulary is apparent throughout his writings and thus, making these books a wonderful contribution to our repertoire. Congratulations to my dear friend Charlie for publishing these gems."

- Hiro Noguchi

Former Member, Atlantic Brass Quintet

Soloist and Educator, Japan

"Charlie Porter’s new lyrical and concert trumpet etudes are absolutely stunning. These recordings and accompanying books set a whole new state of the art in solo classical trumpet literature and performance. The lyrical etudes are beautifully composed at a level that is accessible to any serious trumpet student at a high school or college level of performance. Charlie’s concert etudes set the bar at the highest level of virtuoso musicianship that trumpet players the world over will enjoy pursuing. These recordings, along with those of Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Charles Schlueter, showcase virtuoso performance on Monette instruments at the highest level. They will be a revelation for many in the ease in which one can elevate their musical expression by effortlessly navigating all over the trumpet — in all registers and at all dynamics — at will. Congratulations to Charlie Porter for writing, recording, and publishing trumpet etudes that set a whole new standard for trumpet students and performers the world over to pursue."

- Dave Monette

"Charlie Porter’s stunning new Technical Etudes and the very lovely Lyrical Etudes are breaths of fresh air. Beautifully produced and easily readable presentations are a delight. Charlie’s études are definitely for the advanced players, however they are definitively clearly written. The addition of his recordings of each étude strengthens the musicality to be produced. I feel strongly that Charlie Porter’s new Technical Etudes and the Lyrical Etudes will provide the trumpet community new and excellent repertoire."

- Joyce Davis

DMA Professor Emeritus, Trumpet

University of Florida

Former President of the International Trumpet Guild (first woman)

"Charlie Porter’s Twenty Concert Études for Trumpet and Twenty-Five Lyrical Études for Trumpet are wonderfully written etudes that should begin to be considered as standard repertoire. Porter’s Twenty Concert Études build off of the musical styles of Charlier and Bitsch and even incorporate modern extended techniques into a few of the etudes, such as multiphonics. Alongside the written etudes in this book, Porter intersperses valuable information for the developing musician on setting up a daily fundamental plan for practicing, performing with performance anxiety, composing and improvising, and more. Porter’s Twenty-Five Lyrical Études showcase the beauty that can be achieved on the trumpet while simultaneously challenging the musician. These etudes are organized with one etude in each key, major and minor, traveling in the circle of fourths, and also give the musician a peak behind the curtain of composition with short descriptions and guides for each etude at the start. If you are an advanced or developing musician, I strongly encourage checking out this new collection to the trumpet etude genre. I can’t wait to work through these all myself!"

- Christopher Keach

Asst. Visiting Professor of Trumpet at the Crane School of Music

"I greatly enjoyed going through these two etude books and hearing Charlie play them masterfully! In addition to being a great trumpet player, he is also an excellent educator, which is evident in these books. The texts between the etudes are very helpful and well-written. The recordings are also valuable for understanding how the etudes should be interpreted. Overall, these books are inspiring, challenging, and fun to play both in and outside the practice room. These two wonderful books are a fantastic addition to the trumpet literature!"

- Raymond Riccomini

"It was a pleasure to read through Charlie Porter's Concert Etudes and his Lyrical Etudes. These outstanding etudes are a perfect companion to Charlier's Transcendental Etudes. One of the standout aspects of these books is the logical structure of each etude which makes practicing them a joy. Both etude books will challenge the trumpeter's flexibility, musicality and range. The Concert Etudes tackle a wide variety of technical demands including articulation, endurance, dynamics and fingerings. The Lyrical Etudes focus further on phrasing, tone quality, and musicianship. Both of these books take the trumpeter through a variety of keys and work the fingers and brain. Each etude represents a complete musical work and leaves the player musically satisfied and technically challenged-exactly what I'm looking for in an etude book. I will definitely be using these books with my advanced students!"
